How to look after your mental health using exercise

We all know that physical activity is great for our bodies, it can increase the efficiency of our heart reducing the chances of a heart attack, improve digestion, strengthen our muscles, increase bone density and much more! But did you also know that physical activity is hugely beneficial for our mental health and wellbeing?

In simple terms, mental health is how you feel and think. A positive mental state enables you to enjoy life, work productively and be better equipped to deal with the day-to-day stresses of life. Exercise has been proven to release serotonin (the happy chemical), reduce stress and improve sleep amongst many other benefits.

Here’s what you can do to maintain positive mental health using exercise:

Get physical!

If you have ever been to the gym or even participated in lighter exercise, e.g had a walk in the park, you may recall how it made you feel – relaxed, satisfied and mentally elevated maybe? Physical activity makes you breathe faster, allowing more oxygen to enter your lungs and blood to be circulated throughout your body – this is all good stuff for a healthy body and happy mind.

Have your gym buddies tag along with you!

Training with a buddy can be a great way to improve your fitness while maintaining a social life! You may also find that you can achieve more from these sessions due to having somebody to motivate you. You may also find that not much gets done aside from a lot of laughing – which is also perfectly fine and great for your mind! If you don’t have a pal who is interested in coming to the gym with you, then why not join a group class? Joining a class full of like-minded individuals all in the same boat can be a great way to make new friends!

Work on that self-esteem

Exercise can have a huge boost on your self-esteem, there is almost no better feeling than feeling stronger than you once were! No matter how bad of a day you are having, getting that workout session done is loaded with feelings of accomplishment and positive energy.
